Finnish Medical Association Quality Award 2025

South Savo Hospital District

South Savo was already committed to colonoscopy quality — they tracked it manually in spreadsheets. Scopia made their quality monitoring systematic and automated. The results earned the Finnish Medical Association Quality Award 2025.

The Challenge

South Savo was already tracking colonoscopy quality in Excel, but the manual process was time-consuming for the chief physician. Endoscopists received no automated feedback on their own performance, and turning spreadsheet data into actionable improvements was laborious.

The Solution

Scopia replaced the spreadsheet with nurse-led quality logging. The chief physician's manual work was eliminated, endoscopists began receiving automated personal feedback, and all ESGE indicators became available in a real-time dashboard.

Results

ADR increased by 20 percentage points
From 33% baseline to 53%, well above ESGE minimum (25%)
ADR reached 53%
ESGE minimum is 25% — exceeded by 28 percentage points
Patient comfort improved significantly
Performance awareness led to measurable improvements in patient comfort
“Scopia helped us uncover quality gaps we didn’t know existed. The data-driven approach has transformed how our entire unit works.”

Mehiläinen

Finland's largest private healthcare provider chose Scopia after a rigorous pilot: 1,000 colonoscopies tracked across 17 endoscopes. The results led to a decision to roll out network-wide.

The automatic feedback system systematically improved quality levels and significantly reduced variation between units. Mehiläinen's analytics team built their own PowerBI reporting on top of Scopia's API, integrating colonoscopy quality data into their organisation-wide analytics platform.

“Based on pilot results, colonoscopy quality in our high-volume units is excellent. We gained valuable insights into screening coverage and patient experience. Through data, we will continue to elevate quality further.”

Why Quality Matters

Every 1% ADR Increase = 3% Fewer Interval Cancers

Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrates a direct link between adenoma detection rate and interval colorectal cancer risk. Improving ADR saves lives.
